I’m a pretty analytical guy .. and I prefer to find and analyze “truth” above myth or legend. Unfortunately, most people prefer to overlook the truth and embellish the story that suits them best .. yet the simple fact remains .. you cannot completely destroy truth .. just the same as you cannot destroy energy. You can bend it .. bury it .. hide it .. distort it .. or just plain ignore it .. but truth is forever, just as we are.

It was another one of those gorgeous summer Indiana days .. June 29, 2000 to be exact .. when a dear friend of mine, Brad .. a true “brother” at heart .. rolled into my driveway in Yorktown. He had a sweet new Ultra Classic that he parked next to Bosco .. and they made a nice looking pair of Iron Horses sparkling in the morning sunshine. We’d often let them run side by side as we enjoyed the freedom of the highway and Indiana’s “no helmet law”.

In 2007, I was riding another series of bike events .. and the 25th Annual Laughlin River Run had proven to be an exceptionally large turnout. Some reports said over 30,000 .. others indicated over 70,000. Regardless .. there was a hellova lot of bikes on every road at any given time. That’s the absolute worst part of a huge event .. as so many “weekend warriors” are out there making bad decisions while being distracted in oh-so-many ways .. and lives are lost due to senselessness. “For every action there is a reaction” .. and too often, it’s more costly than one ever imagines.

Awhile back .. I told you the story of my meeting a character named Richard Zehm .. and our memorable ride into Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Hopefully, you’ve been lucky enough to have dined at “Bubba’s” .. stayed at the quaint little Western Motel .. or found yourself at the world famous “Million Dollar Cowboy Bar”. To this day, it’s still one of the most awesome bars I’ve ever been privileged to visit .. not only because of it’s genuine rustic appearance and character, with the old saddle seats at the bar or the “million dollars worth” of vintage silver dollars laminated under all the bar tops for customers to inspect through genuine awestruck eyes .. but primarily because of the unique personal experience I had there and mentioned in the Zehm story as an “upcoming read”. Well .. today’s that day.

A new year .. a new beginning. I guess we often think how things will be different this year .. yet even more often we end up realizing just how much things really stay the same. In the long run .. we end up mimicking the words of our ancestors .. as we all seem to refer to “the good ol’ days”. The truth is .. if you really want your life to “change” .. it’s pretty much as simple as getting off your butt and just doing it.

Often times .. as I’ve wandered around the country .. I’m constantly reminded that the absolute greatest treasures of this country lie in the little obscure towns that few people hear about .. especially when those little burgs have a population less than 1200. As a country boy .. I grew up in the mid-west around those little towns .. so I guess I have a deeper appreciation for what I call the real “heartbeat of America” when I see a single railroad track running through the center of one of these icons of our heritage.

So many times when I’ve headed out on one of my “adventures” .. I have a general idea of where I want to end up .. but rarely worry about the trip details along the way. I point Bosco in the direction we’re headed and take it all in as it develops. No deadlines .. no daily destinations .. and I absorb each and every moment for what it’s worth. If I don’t have to be anywhere in particular that evening .. then I’m never in a hurry .. and I’m never late. Riders that hurry are riders that get careless and make mistakes .. and you know where that destination ends, don’t you?

Just a few years back .. I was in the middle of one of my many laps around the country as I leisurely rolled through Yosemite .. gazing down from Glacier Point with it’s breathtaking views .. and shooting thousands of digital memories along the way to be stored and sorted sometime down the road .. when I’m too old to do anything else. My fear is that I won’t remember what the hell I’m looking at when I finally take the time to tackle that project .. as I’m already afflicted with dementia on more occasions than I care to admit. But I guess that insignificant worry just can’t keep me from traveling and compiling a record number of photos that is quickly approaching the number of miles I’ve logged to date. But with over 174,000 miles now, you can just imagine the places and things I’ve seen in a relatively short period of time. Sadly enough, however .. I’ve often wished I’d had someone with me to share the sights and sounds that pictures just cannot capture .. no matter how good the digital technology .. but most of those miles have just been me and Bosco and whatever thoughts meander between my ears .. and that does have a lot of advantages too.

At the beginning of one of my early Adventures .. I actually “planned” my first stay at a place I found on the internet in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Of course, I had to get 671 miles from Indiana first .. and wouldn’t you know it absolutely poured buckets of rain the first 200 miles of that! And since I knew I was going to be gone for six weeks or better .. I spent hours during my final preparation stage checking my lists .. my gear .. my packing .. my bike .. and, of course, I ended up getting a late start.
