How To: Install a Street Glide iPhone / GPS Mount

In this ‘How To’ we’ll walk you through the installation of an Iron Aces Street Glide iPhone / GPS Mount. Unlike the Road Glide iPhone / GPS Mount that we installed in a previous ‘How To’, the Street Glide Mount has two installation options for attaching the Mount to the inner portion of your Harley-Davidson batwing fairing. The first method we will go over utilizes 3M VHB (Very High Bond) adhesive to affix the Street Glide Mount to your inner fairing while the second method utilizes screws.

** IMPORTANT **
Iron Aces Speed Shop is not responsible for the operation of the Street Glide iPhone / GPS Mount or its compliance with highway regulatory and safety standards. Please use common sense and do not operate either device while riding your motorcycle. Doing so is at your own risk.

Included in the package with your Street Glide iPhone / GPS Mount are the following hardware that will be used to install both the Street Glide Mount to your bikes inner fairing along with hardware for attaching your particular device cradle to the Street Glide Mount.

Installation Option A – 3M VHB Adhesive

Installation Option A includes instructions to attach the Street Glide Mount to your inner fairing using 3M VHB adhesive tape.  This option is for users that do not wish to drill holes through their inner fairing.

** IMPORTANT **
To obtain optimum adhesion, the bonding surfaces must be clean, dry and applied at room temperature.

Step 1a
Using the supplied alcohol prep pad, thoroughly clean the inner fairing surface where the Street Glide Mount will be installed.  To obtain optimum adhesion, the bonding surfaces must be clean, dry and applied at room temperature.

** IMPORTANT **
Allow this surface to thoroughly dry before mounting the Street Glide Mount.

Step 2a
Using the supplied alcohol prep pad, thoroughly clean the lower area on the back side of the Street Glide Mount.  To obtain optimum adhesion, the bonding surfaces must be clean, dry and applied at room temperature.

** IMPORTANT **
Allow this surface to thoroughly dry before applying the 3M VHB adhesive.

Step 3a
Remove the backing on one side of the 3M VHB adhesive tape.

sg-mount-03a

Step 4a
Line up the 3M VHB adhesive tape to the lower area on the back side of the Street Glide Mount.  There should be approximately 1/16″ offset from the tape to the mount.

** IMPORTANT **
Bond strength is dependent upon the amount of adhesive-to-surface contact developed. Firm application pressure develops better adhesive contact and helps improve bond strength.

Step 5a
Once the adhesive has been applied, you are now ready to attach the Street Glide Mount to your inner fairing.

** IMPORTANT **
The following images will illustrate proper placement of the Street Glide Mount prior to attaching to your inner fairing.

Proper Placement – Side View
If the Street Glide Mount is located too far down on the inner fairing, devices that bolt from the rear (i.e. Dynojet Power Vision) will have issues with fitting the bolts through the lower mounting slots.

Proper Placement – Front View
When looking directly at the inner fairing, align your eyes with the top deck of the fairing.  Align the vertical centers of the lower mounting slots with the top lip of the inner fairing.  Notice the red line on the photo below for proper alignment.

Step 6a
Peal the remaining backing from the 3M VHB adhesive tape and line up the Street Glide Mount on your inner fairing.  Once alignment is achieved, press firmly on lower surface of the Street Glide Mount for at least 30 seconds.

** IMPORTANT **
After application, the bond strength will increase as the adhesive flows onto the surface.  At room temperature, approximately 50% of the ultimate strength will be achieved.

Step 7a
With the Street Glide Mount attached to the inner fairing, you are ready to attach your device cradle.

** RECOMMENDED **
Before installing your device cradle, remove your windshield to allow access to the back of the mount.  This will make it much easier to attached the screws and/or nuts.

Installation Option B – Fastening with Screws

Installation Option B includes instructions to attach the Street Glide Mount to your inner fairing by way of drilling through your inner fairing and attaching the Street Glide Mount with screws.

Tools Required

  • Blue Loctite
  • Drill
  • Drill bits – 3/32″; 5/32″
  • Phillips head screwdriver

Step 1b
Remove outer fairing according to manufacturers specifications.

Step 2b
Cut out the drill guide template from instructions supplied with the Street Glide Mount.

** IMPORTANT **
If you downloaded instructions from the internet, DO NOT use the drill guide that you printed!!  Some printers will not print this at the true size, therefore the hole guide will not be accurate.

Step 3b
Line up the top of the drill hole guide to the lip on the back of the top deck of your inner fairing.  Use tape on either side to secure the drill hold guide to the inner fairing.

Step 4b
Fold the drill guide over the front of your inner fairing.  Be sure that the guide is centered properly and that it is level.

Step 5b
Place a small piece of tape to secure the drill hole guide.

Step 6b
Mark drill holes with a scribe or small drill bit.

Step 7b
Using a 3/32″-drill bit, drill two pilot holes.  Once the pilot holes have been drilled, use a 5/32″-drill bit to drill the final holes through the inner fairing.  Clean drilled holes of any plastic burs.

** IMPORTANT **
Use extreme caution while drilling through the inner fairing as the composite plastic has a tendency to grab the drill bit, pulling the drill into the fairing.

Step 8b
Use blue Loctite on screw threads prior to installation to prevent loosening.

sg-mount-08b

Step 9b
Carefully place the Street Glide Mount into place on the front of the inner fairing then thread supplied screws into place using a phillips head screwdriver to snug.

Step 10b
Your Street Glide Mount is now installed.

Step 11b
With the Street Glide Mount attached to the inner fairing, you are now ready to attach your device cradle.

** RECOMMENDED **
Before installing your device cradle, remove your windshield to allow access to the back of the mount.  This will make it much easier to attached the screws and/or nuts.

Step 12b
Install the outer fairing according to manufacturers specifications.
