In this ‘How To’ we are going to walk you through the installation the Iron Aces Rushmore Road Glide Mount for ’15 & newer Harley-Davidson Road Glide models. Similar to how we installed the Street Glide Mount in a previous ‘How To‘ entry, the Rushmore Road Glide Mount is installed using automotive-grade, 3M VHB(Very High Bond) Adhesive. While the adhesive bond formed between the 3M VHB Adhesive and the instrument bezel is an effective way to install the Rushmore Road Glide Mount, it will ONLY provide a lifetime of use when the instructions have been followed step-by-step…we cannot stress this enough, please follow the instructions word-for-word!!
** IMPORTANT **
Iron Aces Speed Shop is not responsible for the operation of the Rushmore Road Glide Mount or its compliance with highway regulatory and safety standards. Please use common sense and do not operate either device while riding your motorcycle. Doing so is at your own risk.
Tools Required
- Blue Loctite
- Allen Wrench – 2mm, 3mm & 7mm
- Phillips Screwdriver
Included in the package with your Rushmore Road Glide Mount are the following installation hardware. This hardware is used to build your Rushmore Road Glide Mount as well as connect virtually any device cradle to it.
In Steps 1 thru 3, we will be assembling our Rushmore Road Glide Mount. As indicated below, this will consist of three pieces 1) the Iron Aces Mount 2) the Rotating Cam 3) the Iron Aces Mount Base.
Step 1
Place two nylon lock nuts (nylon end facing out) into the mounting boss channel, prior to attaching the Iron Aces Mount to the Rotating Cam.
Step 2
Using a 2mm allen wrench, assemble the Iron Aces Mount to the Rotating Cam using the supplied cam-to-mount screws. Tighten snuggly.
** IMPORTANT **
Use Blue Loctite on the Iron Aces Mount-to-Rotating Cam screw threads prior to installation to prevent loosening.
Step 3
Using a 3mm allen wrench, assemble the Iron Aces Mount and rotating cam to the Iron Aces Mount base with the supplied base-to-cam screws.
** IMPORTANT **
Do not tighten the base-to-cam screws fully until after the Iron Aces Mount base has been mounted properly to the instrument bezel. The base has a small amount of flex, therefore the fitment will be affected if the base is tightened snuggly.
Step 4
Using the supplied alcohol prep pad, thoroughly clean the instrument bezel surface where the Rushmore Road Glide Mount will be installed.
** IMPORTANT **
Allow the surface to thoroughly dry before moving on to Step 5.
Step 5
Once the instrument bezel has been cleaned using the alcohol prep pad and given ample time to dry, apply a thin, uniform coating of the supplied 3M 94 Primer to the instrument bezel where the Rushmore Road Glide Mount will be installed. Allow the 3m 94 Primer coating to thoroughly dry for at least five minutes before moving to Step 6.
** IMPORTANT **
To obtain optimum adhesion, the bonding surfaces must be clean, dry and applied at room temperature.
Step 6a
Remove the VHB protective film from the bottom of the base and loosely align the Rushmore Road Glide Mount to the instrument bezel. Take extra time for proper center alignment.
** HELPFUL TIP **
The Iron Aces Mount base is profiled to match the profile of the instrument bezel. Use center hole of the Rushmore Road Glide Mount logo for proper centering.
Step 6b
Proper forward alignment will be achieved with the base sits 1/8″ from the front of the instrument bezel.
Step 6c
Proper rear alignment will be achieved with the base sits 1/8″ from the rear of the instrument bezel. Once proper alignment is achieved, press firmly on the Rushmore Road Glide Mount for 30 seconds.
** IMPORTANT **
Bond strength is dependent upon the amount of adhesive-to-surface contact developed. Firm application pressure develops better adhesive contact and helps improve bond strength. After application, the bond strength will increase as adhesive flows onto the surface. At room temperature, approximately 50% of the ultimate strength will be achieved after 20 minutes; 90% after 24 hours and 100% bond strength is achieved after 72 hours.
Step 7
After the VHB has had 72 hours of cure time, remove the base-to-cam screws. Apply Blue Loctite to the screw threads to prevent loosening, then tighten snuggly.
Now that your Rushmore Road Glide Mount has been installed, it’s time to attach the device cradle. At Iron Aces Speed Shop, we offer two universal device cradle solutions, the Perfect Squeeze Universal Holder and the RAM Mount Universal X-Gip. Each of these universal cradles are easy to install and will allow you to use virtually any device with your Rushmore Road Glide Mount.
Perfect Squeeze Universal Holder
Install the two allen screws included with the Perfect Squeeze Universal Holder thru the back of the top angled holes on Rushmore Road Glide Mount and tighten snuggly to the top mounting holes on the back of the Perfect Squeeze.
** IMPORTANT **
Use Blue Loctite on the Perfect Squeeze mounting screws to prevent loosening.
RAM Mount Universal X-Grip Installation
Slide the longest supplied flat head screw through the center hole of the RAM Mount Universal X-Grip. Then place the supplied large standoff through the flat head screw once from the back of the X-Grip and slide through the center hole of the Rushmore Road Glide Mount. Using one of the supplied washers and lock nuts, snuggly tighten.
Is there away to have 2. devices on the exact same mount?
Unfortunately we have never attempted to install two devices to a single Iron Aces Mount so we cannot say whether it can be accomplished or not.
Do you need to screw into the bike at all? Is the 3m tape the only thing holding the mount to the bike!?
You will not drill anything in to the bike. The 3M VHB (very high bond) Adhesive we use will hold the Mount securely in all weather conditions assuming that the installation instructions are followed.
